The Institute of Medicine (IOM) of the National Academies, with
support from HRSA and other Federal agencies, is conducting a study,
The Future of Emergency Care in the U.S. Health System. Objectives
of the study are:
- Examine the emergency care system in the U.S.;
- Explore its strengths, limitations, and future challenges;
- Describe a desired vision of the emergency care system; and
- Recommend strategies required to achieve that vision.
Reports are expected in late 2005 and early 2006.

Lively dialogue and constructive comments marked the initial roll-out
and discussion of version 3.1 of the Rural EMS Agenda for the Future.
The open forum was attended by about 100 people representing a broad
cross-section of the individuals with an interest in rural EMS,
including state, regional and local EMS directors; representatives
of offices of rural health; rural hospital administrators, educators
and trainers, and health professionals at all levels of training,
licensure and certification from First Responders through physicians.
Group consensus was achieved on many of the key recommendations.
In very few instances, consensus did not emerge and these recommendations
will be referred back to the writing/editorial group for additional
work.
The meeting was held in conjunction with the annual meeting of the
National Rural Health Association meeting in San Diego, California
on May 26, 2004.
